The town of Varshets is located at the foot of Mount Todorini Kukli, Western Stara Planina. It is located 90 km from Sofia, 35 km north of Montana. Varshets was established as a balneotherapy center as early as 1850, earning it the title of the oldest balneotherapy resort in Bulgaria. The development of Varshets as a balneo resort is carried out by the activities of Dr. Damyan Ivanov, who is the first balneologist in Bulgaria with a European education. With the help of Dr. Ivanov, in 1910 the first mineral bath in Bulgaria was opened in Varshets, later in 1930 the second one was built, which is still working today. В близост до тях, през 1934 г. е изградена чешма, чиято вода е с температура от 37 °С. The water in Varshets is known as one of the softest in Bulgaria. Mineral waters are beneficial for the treatment of diseases of the nervous and cardiovascular systems, the musculoskeletal system and the gastrointestinal tract
In Varshets, visitors can also enjoy one of the largest artificial parks in Bulgaria, stretching over 800 decares of land. In 1934 the Sunny Garden was also built, which merges with the park of Varshets, a landmark is the alleys of the garden, which are built like sun rays, which is where the name of the garden comes from. The park is also connected to another interesting place in the city, namely Ivanchova Polyana. The meadow is part of the “Path of Health” – a famous place for sports and recreation. The most famous pedestrian area in Varshets is the “Boulevard with the plane trees”, passing from the city center almost to the Zanozhene district. The alley is known for its centuries-old trees surrounding the pedestrian area. Another interesting natural landmark is the Vodopada area, which is located south of Varshets and is a two-tiered water cascade along the Orlovshtitsa River. There is an eco-trail above the Zanozhene district, where lovers of eco-tourism have the opportunity to visit Todorini Kukli peak (1785 m). For the convenience of visitors, the tourist information center offers guides to the summit. Another way to reach the top is the area of Zeleni del, which is located 10 km from the town of Varshets.
A curious place for visitors to Varshets is, of course, the Orthodox church “St. Georgi Pobedonoset” declared a cultural monument. The construction of the temple began in 1902, it was completely completed in 1906, and in 1992 it was completely restored. The most interesting thing in it is the unique carving of the iconostasis, the icons dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, chandeliers produced in Jerusalem and Constantinople and others. Every year on St. George’s Day, a sacrifice is made there.
Apart from the Orthodox church “St. Georgi Pobedonosets”, 13 km from Varshets, is the Klisur Monastery “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”. The monastery is open to visitors all year round from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
One of the symbols of the city is a bronze sculpture from the 2nd century BC of the Thracian boy – god Telesphorus. The statue is exhibited in the municipal museum of the town of Varshets, established in 1999. In the museum, you can also visit the “Antique”, “Archaeological finds and coin collection”, “Balneology” and “Ethnographic” sections.
In the month of August, the traditional holiday of the city takes place – “Feast of the resort, mineral water and the Balkans”.
